Introduction to a Photography

I picked up a camera at a very early age in the late 1950’s which was my grandmothers Kodak box camera before my parents bought me a Kodak Brownie 127. Over subsequent years I bought more up-to-date cameras as time when on and technology changed. I started as a very amateurish photographer (taking snaps) and getting more serious during my adulthood. While working in the Middle East in the 1990’s I tried my hand at developing film. I was in a fortunate position where the company I worked for supplied a dark room, equipment and chemicals. I took full advantage of this teaching myself as I went on developing prints.

In My Retirement

Since my retirement in 2018, I have been trying to develope my skills at landscape photography learning from professional landscape photographers on YouTube, such as Nigel Densen, Gary Gough, Henry Turner, and many others. It has not been an easy journey as most landscape photographers would agree. Recently I have branched out to other genres of photography such as wildlife and astrophotography.

The Camera Brand I Use

I bought a Minolta 7000 SLR film camera from a shop in Edinburgh in the 1990’s. Since I had a number of lenses with the Minolta mount, which later became the Sony A-mount, my camera of choice became the Sony brand. My first DSLR camera was the Sony A700 In 2022 as it had an A-mount so I did not have to buy extra lenses. When I upgraded my camera I continued with the Sony brand. In July 2022 I upgraded to a full frame Sony A7R3 which was my dream camera, then I had to gradually change my lenses to E-mount lenses. I continued with the Sony brand as I have been very satisfied with the brand of camera which I am used to and I will probably continue with the brand. I recon many photographers would disagree with my choice but we generally stick to the brand we are comfortable with!

The Future

In 2023, I purchased a Newtonian reflector telescope and all the technological gadgets that go with it to try deep sky astrophotography using dedicated cameras. Again, learning from the experts on YouTube such as Trevor Jones of AstroBackyard, Nico Carver of Nebula Photos, Chris of catchingprotons, and many more. I am finding this more challenging that landscape photography!
